Planning your wedding flowers can feel like a lot at first.

There are so many options — bouquets, centrepieces, ceremony flowers, colours, styles — and it’s not always obvious where to start. If you’re feeling unsure, you’re definitely not alone.

The good news is, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Once you break it down, choosing your wedding flowers becomes much more manageable (and actually quite enjoyable).

Start with your overall style

Before thinking about specific flowers, it helps to think about the overall feel of your wedding.

Is it soft and romantic?

Modern and minimal?

Wildflower-inspired?

Classic and elegant?

Your flowers should complement your venue, dress and colour palette, so starting with a general style makes everything else fall into place more easily.

Choose your key pieces first.

You don’t need to plan everything at once.

Start with the main pieces:

  • Bridal bouquet

  • Bridesmaid bouquets

  • Buttonholes

Once these are decided, it becomes much easier to build the rest of your florals around them.

Think about your colour palette

Your flowers are one of the best ways to bring your colour scheme together.

You don’t need to match everything perfectly, but choosing tones that complement your overall palette will help create a cohesive look across your day.

This is something I always guide brides on — sometimes it’s about softening colours, adding contrast, or bringing in texture.

Consider your venue

Your venue plays a big role in how your flowers will look.

For example:

  • Large spaces often suit bigger statement pieces like arches or urns

  • Smaller venues may benefit from more delicate arrangements

  • Outdoor weddings can suit softer, more natural styles

Thinking about your space helps ensure your flowers feel balanced rather than too minimal or too overwhelming.

Decide what matters most to you

Not every couple needs every type of floral arrangement.

Some prefer to invest in a statement ceremony setup, while others focus more on table styling or bouquets.

There’s no right or wrong — it’s about what feels most important for your day.

Why many brides choose faux wedding flowers

More and more couples are now considering artificial wedding flowers as an alternative to fresh.

They allow you to:

  • Plan everything in advance

  • Avoid last-minute stress

  • Keep your bouquet afterwards

  • Have full flexibility with colours and styles

For many brides, it’s simply a more relaxed way to approach wedding flowers.

Take your time (and don’t overthink it)

It’s easy to feel like you need to have everything decided straight away, but your ideas will naturally evolve as you plan your wedding.

Saving inspiration photos, building a Pinterest board, and keeping track of what you like is a great place to start.

From there, it becomes much easier to turn those ideas into something that works for your day.

Final thoughts

Choosing your wedding flowers doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Start with a style, focus on the key pieces, and build from there. Whether you choose fresh or faux flowers, the most important thing is that they feel right for you and your wedding.
